Tenerife - El Teide

Tenerife Summer Holiday - third part

A new day dawning.
Today we want to explore Puerto de la Cruz where the world-famous Loro Parque is located. But we have planned an extra day for this. Today we are going sightseeing in town.
Early in the morning, the waves are gently breaking, the sun is shining and the wind is softly flowing through our hair, we enjoy the feeling on our terrace.
We walk to the car rental agency and rent a car for our holiday week, because we plan to visit the mountain village of Masca on the Teide and to go to the Orotava valley etc. One week will not be enough to explore this diversified island and we already know that we will come back one day.

We put a bottle of water and sunscreen in the car and off we go. The highway is easy to find and we go in the northern direction. On the road, we continue to admire the Atlantic Ocean which is never out of sight during our trip. Blooming plants, vigorous palms, and some towns lie to the right and to the left of us, and now and then we discover something especially beautiful. The closer we get to the north, the more the landscape changes. It becomes greener and more colourful.

We take the Puerto de la Cruz exit and our first destination is the Botanical Garden, the Jardín Botanico.
It is a real treasure and shows us Tenerife's botanical diversity.
Here you can admire blooming orchids, green ferns, big aloe vera plants and mighty trees.
We enjoy the calmness and the diversity of species that are shown here and we can only recommend the Jardín Botanico.

Tenerife - Botanical GardenOur next destination is the port of Puerto de la Cruz, where we want to park our car and explore the city.
Right opposite the fishing harbour, there is the Plaza del Charco, which constitutes the centre of the inner city of Puerto de la Cruz.
This is the famous meeting point for the locals and the tourists; there you can find cafés and restaurants, admire historical buildings which are nowadays used as shops and offices.
We walk through pedestrian zone and are enthusiastic about the neatness and the flowerage which are all around.
A multitude of shops are lined up here and we do not even know where to start looking.
We see magnificent Canarian houses and are fascinated by the flair of this town.
We stroll through narrow alleys, walk on picturesque paths and excitedly absorb the atmosphere.

In a café with a bakery, we buy fantastic oven-baked bread, of which we learn that it was made at El Monasterio, the former monastery, which nowadays accommodates several restaurants and a beautiful park, above Puerto de la Cruz.
Of course, we also wish to spend some hours there and we understand that Tenerife is not only a sunny island but offers a great variety of different and interesting attractions, and that one week is not enough to explore everything.

While we are on the highway to return back south to our holiday domicile in El Médano, we agree that our next holiday will of course be on this paradisiacal island, again.

Tenerife – we will come back.
