map of Italy - Venice, Florence

Bardolino, Venice, Florence (1/2)

It was a beautifully sunny Monday morning, when we finally reached the Southern Alps after a long journey. I was hardly able to avert my eyes from the window of our old Mercedes although after the 15-hour journey, I was so tired that I could hardly keep my eyes open. The landscape with its verdant, almost majestic-looking mountain chains of the Italian Alps was completely unknown and fascinating to me and created the perfect beginning to my holiday in Italy.

After a few hours, we reached our first important destination: Bardolino. Here, in the heart of Veneto, I and my family got out of the car to enjoy and have a very close experience of the beautiful landscape and the perfume of water, more precisely of the Lake Garda. And the break was worthwhile. Even from the small road, where we parked the car, we were able to overlook the still deserted, traditional alleys which seemed to keep so many secrets. This was simply a beautiful sight: On the one side there was the promenade which was already bustling with activity and on the other side there was absolute silence. This panorama was completed by a bright blue horizon with the rising sun.

After a copious breakfast we continued our journey. The destination was Venice. I really have to say that I was hardly able to suppress my disappointment when we finally reached Venice. Although the scenery of old monuments and the eternal small bridges and alleys was ever so charming, the odour was dreadful, at least as much as the thousands of tourists, among whom we had to count ourselves. Although we had intended to spend three days in this city, which is said to be so idyllic and romantic, we decided to stay for one and a half days only, and spontaneously continued our journey to see Florence.
