Crete - Diversified Holiday Paradise (part 2 / 2)
Activities
Water sports are possible in any form and at almost any place on Crete. Whether you prefer swimming, diving, surfing, water skiing, sailing or even rides in a pedalo, all these activities are offered by the local organisers. Only the beautiful sand beaches (Rethymnon, Vai, Paleochora and Haghia Marina) invite you to have long sunbaths and to relax. A variety of offers even address hikers, walkers, and bikers. There is a great number of designated hiking trails and bikeways which are open to all tourists. It is even possible to ski in winter on the Lefká Óri. Apart from these activities there are a great number of other offers so that the stay on the island will be an unforgettable experience.
Country/People
People on Crete are very self-confident, proud and amiable. They like feasting, in particular on holidays for the saints or for political reasons. If you are on Crete on Assumption Day – Panagia – you should not fail to visit the village of Colimbari, where the feast is particularly beautiful. All tourists/locals from everywhere on Crete rush there to join in the feast. There are real crowds that pilgrimage the narrow path up to the monastery of Gonia and bring along their own bread, which they have blessed; afterward they copiously eat and dance. The feast only ends in the early morning hours of the next day as the Greek have much perseverance and time. As they only rarely get upset they have their very own charm.
Meals/Drinks
As there is no cattle-breading on Crete, there are not a great number of different meals. Mostly, you get grilled Souvlaki with an ordinary table wine. In the ports, of course, you can choose among a great variety of fresh seafood. Those who like wine will get their money worth, natural pure wines of different nature are offered everywhere. Before and after the meal you are always offered the famous Greek anis-flavoured liquor, Ouzo, to which you can order water. You should drink it slowly and enjoy it.
