Barcelona (2 / 2)

On the most well-known mountain of Barcelona, the Montjuic, we visited the rests of the world exhibition and the Olympic Games which both took place in Barcelona in 1992. We found the "Spanish village" with its miniatures of the most famous Spanish buildings particularly interesting. The museum of the famous Spanish artist Miró, which is also domiciled on the Montjuic, is also absolutely worth seeing.
For art lovers, as my companion, Barcelona turned out to be the perfect destination. For example, we visited the Picasso museum which is located near the port, the Museum of Modern Arts and the different buildings designed by Gaudí in the centre of the city.
Whenever we had enough of the visits, we relaxed on the city's beach which was only rarely over-crowded, despite the pleasant weather in May. The Olympic Quarter, which you recognize even from a long distance thanks to its statue that glitters in the sun and is located near the sea, is a place where you can especially nicely sit on the cliffy coast. On weekends, hobby-painters meet there to paint the view of Barcelona's coast. There is a huge hoarding which is partly decorated with artful graffiti, of which we both took numerous photos.

Barcelona's night life turned out to be multifaceted enough to enable our friends to show us a different inexpensive and good club nearly every evening. In general, parties in Barcelona, as in nearly all southern countries, do not really start before one o'clock at night but do not end before the early morning hours, either. As the city is full of tourists in May, and as there are several universities and colleges of higher education, most of the clubs were open until the morning every day of the week. As a consequence, the centre of the city is full of people every evening, too, and the bustle in the streets only quiets in the morning hours. If you are sensitive to noise, you should ask for a room on the opposite side from the street.

My companion was particularly fond of the Apollo Club in the El Raval Quarter. It was mainly frequented by students and we went to the concert of an electronic music band from Barcelona which turned out to be very good. The drinks at the Apollo were very cheap and the Club is easy to reach from the centre of the city.

We spent most of the last days of our stay to go shopping. Barcelona's city centre offers a wide variety of shops; and the little byroads, where countless little shops from all over the world are located, are absolutely worthwhile to explore. In the old market halls at the Ramblas, there is a large vegetable and fish market every day and a visit is worthwhile even if you do not want to buy anything. After two weeks in Barcelona and a little farewell party with our friends, we returned tanned and laden with shopping bags to Germany.
